GUIDE TO SETTING UP YOUR FOODSHARE SCHEME

Started by Foodshare Mark Jul. 2, 2009.

Welcome to Foodshare!

As featured on BBC Radio 4 Gardeners' Question Time

The new website for Foodshare UK is www.foodshare.co.uk

Are you a Kitchen Gardener, Allotment, School or Smallholder growing your own produce? Foodshare's aim is to link up local growers with charities that would love fresh food donations, either from surplus harvest or produce from a dedicate "Foodshare Bed". It's a brand new way to give. Become a Food Philanthropist today!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
(1) SIGN UP to Foodshare.

(2) SELECT A CHARITY - Search our map of charities already signed up to Foodshare or contact your favourite local charity to support. It might be a local charity with a kitchen (such as a hospice or homeless shelter), a community group, a soup kitchen, care home, underprivileged families, the elderly and more.

(3) DECIDE HOW YOU WISH TO DONATE FOOD

a) SURPLUS SCHEME - Donate any surplus produce grown throughout the year
and/or
b) CREATE A FOODSHARE BED - Create a specific bed or dedicate an area to grow produce for the charity.

(4) HAMPER COLLECTION POINT - If you are starting a Foodshare group with others (such as on an allotment) create a central point for all produce to be donated and start a rota for people to check and deliver donations.

Six more great reasons to get involved:

1) Help reduce a local charity's food costs. Donating food is the equivalent of making a monetary donation.
2) The charity receives local, seasonal produce - far healthier and fresher than mass-produced agricultural crops.

3) The charities you support will be even more grateful than your compost heap!
4) You will help reduce 'food miles' locally (the distance food is transported) and therefore help the environment through lower carbon emissions.
5) Share and swap surplus seeds, seedlings and plants as well as discover local growing tips within your foodshare community.
6) It's a great way to help build a local community spirit and your generousity will inspire others!

This site is the central hub for all members of The Foodshare Network around the world. Through the Foodshare Guide, we will show you how to make this project a success in your local community. We will also collate how much food has been donated.

And you can help nourish The Foodshare Network, by feeding back to us your experiences and tips from your local project so we can continue to improve the scheme for the wider community.

Please sign up today and let's get growing!
